We are pleased to present an important and intriguing exhibition of Torah pointers, objects central to Jewish prayer and ritual. Known by their Hebrew name, yads, these ceremonial yet practical instruments are used to keep one’s place in the Torah scroll when reading from its densely hand-lettered Hebrew text.
The Guiding Hand: The Barr Foundation Judaica Collection of Torah Pointers is on view in The Breman’s newly updated Discovery Gallery from October 11 through December 2023.

Discover something new in something old with The Breman Museums Atlanta Jewish History Talks. Enjoy a series of six talks with Atlanta’s foremost historians on major events that affected the tapestry of Jewish Atlanta. In support of the Breman Museum’s mission to “Connect people to Jewish history, culture, and arts,” the newest exhibition, A Jazz Memoir: Photography by Herb Snitzer features photography documenting America’s jazz scene, focusing on the 1957–1964, of his over fifty-year career. For most of that time, Herb was the photography editor for Metronome, the primary magazine devoted to jazz. Images of Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Count Basie and many others are showcased in the exhibit. Additional works reveal his desire to use photography to effect social change and his belief that “Injustice for one is injustice for all.” A Jazz Memoir also speaks to the links that connect Jews, jazz and the African American community.

Terra Infirma is an exhibition of sixty artists presenting works inspired by the urgent need to address global warming and heal our natural environments. Even as we are all stuck at home The Breman is presenting a virtual version of the exhibition on September 7th that you can peruse here.

The Curating Your Family Story program is a multigenerational Jewish heritage journey, where participants – this year from Congregation Shearith Israel (6th Grade) – explore their Jewish family roots, genealogy, traditions and stories. This program culminates with each student creating an artistic piece, representing a family story that is entered into an international competition and will be on display at the Breman Museum’s Curating Your Family Story Exhibition

Canada’s poet laureate, Leonard Cohen was one of the most fascinating and enigmatic singer/songwriters of the 20th century. This perfomance features former Cohen band member, Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Perla Batalla sharing songs and personal anecdotes from her time and travels with Cohen.

After escaping the perils of the Holocaust in France, Henri Dauman rose to become one of the preeminent photojournalists of the 20th Century whose iconic images appeared in Life, Newsweek and The New York Times. Producing more than one million prints, Dauman’s subjects included artists, world leaders, ordinary citizens and significant historical events which defined the 20th Century.

This 13-panel traveling exhibition examines the lives and experiences of young Jehovah’s Witnesses who suffered due to their refusal to accept Nazi ideology. Self-guided audio tours accessible through smartphones are available with survivors in the exhibition relating their stories.

Harry Houdini wasn’t born. He was invented.
Inescapable explores the creation of Houdini by the poor Jewish immigrant, Ehrich Weiss, with a look at the technologies, marketing prowess, and entertainment trends that allowed a superstar to emerge. Inescapable: The Life and Legacy of Harry Houdini
was created by the Jewish Museum of Maryland.

Enduring Tension, (En)countering Antisemitism in Every Age allows visitors to briefly examine the reach and impact of Antisemitism throughout the ages. This exhibition is in collaboration with Kennesaw State University’s Museum of History and Holocaust Education.

Curating Your Family Story is a program created by the Breman Museum in Atlanta in partnership with Beit Hatfutsot Museum of the Jewish People in Israel. This 2018 program engaged 5th and 6th grade students from Congregation Shearith Israel and led them on a search into their own pasts. Curating Your Family Story stems from My Family Story, a worldwide Jewish heritage program and competition, now celebrating its 23rd year. The search, interpreted artistically, connected students to their family stories and to the greater narrative of Jewish heritage. The exploration into each student’s personal histories, genealogies, and traditions culminated in this exhibition.

The magazine was one of the longest-running underground publication to be regularly produced by Nazi prisoners. From 1942-1944, VEDEM’s teenage authors documented their harrowing existence with defiance, humor, heartbreak, and poignancy, and created an enduring example of social activism through artistic expression. Using graphics, drawings, paintings, prose, and poetry, we hear the voices of some of the era’s youngest resistance fighters who refused to give up their identity, humanity, and fighting spirit.

This exhibition weaves together America’s favorite pastime, baseball, and its role in creating a national identity. Through films, footage, photographs, and a database of American Jewish ballplayers, Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American explores how baseball historically played a crucial role in understanding, and sometimes challenging, what it means to be American.

This exhibition details the dramatic recovery of historic materials relating to the Jewish community in Iraq. Recovered from a flooded basement in Saddam Hussein’s intelligence headquarters, these materials have been painstakingly preserved by the National Archives.

Curating Your Family Story is an initiative begun last year by the Breman Museum in partnership with Beit Hatfutsot, the museum of the Jewish people, based on the enduring My Family Story initiative. Now in its 22nd anniversary year, My Family Story is a fun-filled, meaningful, personal, global, and multigenerational Jewish heritage journey, where the exploration of one’s Jewish family roots, genealogy and traditions culminates in an artistic piece that is entered into an international competition.

The Jewish Educational Loan Fund (JELF) has a long and storied history that reflects the dynamic role of Jewish giving and a commitment to higher education in the South. As the Jewish Georgian reported, “No one knew in 1876, least of all the founders, the multi-generational significance of their philanthropy.”

Now in its 21th anniversary year, My Family Story is a fun-filled, meaningful, personal, global and multi-generational Jewish heritage journey, where the exploration of one’s Jewish family roots, genealogy and traditions culminates in an artistic installation.

ATLANTA COLLECTS celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Breman Museum by highlighting diverse pieces from Jewish collectors in and around Atlanta. The goal of the exhibition is to showcase the breadth and depth of Jewish-owned collections in Atlanta.

Celebrate 100 Years of Hadassah Atlanta! Hadassah is a charitable women-led organization that was established in Atlanta on November 2, 1916 to provide emergency care for infants and mothers in pre-state Israel. Back then, Hadassah had only 18 charter members. Today, the organization boasts 3,700. Follow Hadassah Atlanta’s journey and their impact on health, medicine, education and community locally, nationally, and internationally from generation to generation.

In 2012, the Women of Valor Chai Quilt was created as part of the Breman’s Legacy Quilt project. The project produced three quilts which were displayed as part of the Creating Community Exhibition at the museum. The Women of Valor Chai Quilt represents eighteen Jewish women who have made significant contributions to the arts, social service, politics, and social justice in the last 50 years of Georgian history. Each of their contributions are commemorated through the art of quilting.

Zap! Pow! Bam! immerses visitors in an interactive world of Super Heroes, illuminating the creative processes that drove their designers to provide America with timeless icons such as Superman, Batman, Captain America and Wonder Woman. With the American economy deep in the throws of the Great Depression and fascism on the rise in Europe, a group of young, largely Jewish, artists began to create illustrated stories of superheroes to provided the nation with an optimistic antidote for the growing sense of despair and helplessness. In addition to rare never-before-displayed comic book art and memorabilia, ZAP! POW! BAM! features 1940s serials, video interviews, a vintage child-size Bat mobile ride, interactive phone booth, a drawing studio, and costumes for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

Fifty years ago the Memorial to the Six Million was erected in Greenwood Cemetery. Come to the Breman Museum to view artifacts and hear stories about the origin and symbolism of this unique and historic memorial.

Eighteen Artifacts: A Story of Jewish Atlanta’ explores the history of Jews in Atlanta through artifacts, images, and oral histories. Each of the exhibition’s central 18 artifacts represents an integral moment in the growth of a people and a city.

Even after 100 years the events surrounding the murder of Mary Phagan and the trial and lynching of Leo Frank remain both disturbing and morbidly fascinating. Seeking Justice allows visitors to look at the momentous and tragic events of the years 1913-1915 through the lens of the societal and political tensions that existed in Atlanta at that time. The full exhibition provides an immersive experience for visitors, while an artifact only display for smaller spaces conveys this story’s significance in a more condensed manner.

Does PEACE have the same definition to a Holocaust survivor and a homeless man, a Somali refugee and a military chaplain, a pottery instructor and an oil company executive? Over fifty subjects describe what peace means to them, how they work toward it in their lives, and overcome the obstacles they encounter.

The acclaimed children’s exhibition “Where the Wild Things Are: Maurice Sendak in His Own Words and Pictures” with engaging multi-media components features the famed “chicken soup” slide, a dress up area, and activity stations where children can let out their inner Wild Things.

Return to Rich’s was The Breman’s signature exhibition of 2013. It was the aim of this exhibition to stir fond memories of a ride on the Pink Pig, a glamorous evening at Fashionata, or Rich’s legendary customer service.
